Monogram Monday: Below the Border (1942)

Buck Jones, Tim McCoy, and Raymond Hatton, old hands at movie-making whose audience appeal dated back to the silents, made an appealing western trio for Monogram as the Rough Riders. In this series entry, U.S. Marshals Buck Roberts (Jones), Tim McCall (McCoy), and Sandy Hopkins (Hatton) investigate a gang that has murdered a local sheriff and is using a rancho just over the Mexican border as a base, unbeknownst to the owner. As is common in the series, all three marshals are operating undercover: Buck as a notorious fence, Tim as a cattle buyer, and Sandy as a swamper in a saloon run by one of the bad guys. Action with some humor is the keynote, and the charismatic chums make it a pleasure to watch.

Mildly recommended, with a stronger recommendation to fans. Otto judiciously thinks this movie is OK.
