Cry Danger (RKO, 1951)

Rocky Mulloy (Dick Powell) is back in town after five years in prison, freed because an old pal (Richard Erdman) has at last come forward to back up his alibi, though the viewer quickly learns that Rocky has never met this “old pal” before, and the guy is hoping to cash in on some hidden loot from the robbery and murder that got Rocky sent up. A friendship does develop between the two, however, as Rocky aims both to clear his friend Danny, who is also serving time for the crimes, and to establish the guilt of crook Louis Castro (William Conrad, in fine form as a bad guy). Complicating matters is Danny’s wife, Nancy (Rhonda Fleming), whom Rocky has always loved, and who has some secrets of her own. Regis Toomey shines as the weary cop who is hoping that Rocky’s release will lead to resolution for the old crime. Entertaining but undistinguished.

Mildly recommended. Otto judiciously thinks this movie is OK, but not great.

Movie 511 for 2021.
