Lightweight entertainment in which Barry Gilbert and Doc Norton (Louis Hayward and J. C. Nugent), two guys down on their luck, take shelter in an empty home, only to awaken to the arrival of servants, who take Barry to be the rightful owner, John Clark Reitter, Jr. (Eric Linden), who is estranged from his newspaper-owning father. Barry decides to take advantage of the misconception to enjoy a little of the high life, but circumstances soon make matters much more complicated: young Reitter is in jail, accused of a murder he did not commit, and Reitter’s wife (Sheila Bromley) pleads with the masquerading Barry to help him out. Barry does so, investigating on his own and earning his reward. Hayward is fairly appealing once the movie gets past the initial setup, and Nugent is great fun as his worried pal, but the plot may be just a bit too complicated.
Mildly recommended. Otto judiciously thinks this movie is OK, but not great.
Movie 465 for 2021.
