Flame of the West (Monogram, 1945)

This movie is a bit different from the Johnny Mack Brown movies from Monogram that I’ve been watching. Here he is not U.S. Marshal Nevada Jack McKenzie. Rather, he is a doctor, a man who used to wield his guns but did so in error once and put them aside. He tries to steer clear of his new town’s efforts to clean things up, although he does become friendly with the new marshal, a man with a reputation for violence named Tom Nightlander (Douglass Dumbrille). Also prominent in the cast is Joan Woodbury, playing saloon gal Poppy Rand, who shows a soft side and has some sort of past with the new marshal. Frequent Brown co-star Raymond Hatton is billed high in the cast but has a relatively minor role. And though Brown has a heroic part to play, the movie really belongs to Dumbrille, who is appealing and compelling as the town-tamer.

Recommended. Otto finds this one pleasing enough to relax.

Movie 158 for 2021.
