Drums of the Desert (Monogram, 1940)

Lobby card for the movie Drums of the DesertPaul Dumont, a French Foreign Legion officer (Ralph Byrd) on his way out to introduce the troops to parachuting, finds love aboard ship, only to learn later that he has fallen for his best friend’s fiancée, Helene (Lorna Gray), making life a misery for him. When a failed attack on a Legion encampment results in the execution of a local leader’s brother, the surviving sibling plots to avenge his brother’s death, and preventing the deaths of Lieut. Dumont and Helene will depend on the courage and combat skills of the Senegalese paratroopers whom Dumont had trained. Mantan Moreland has a good role as the sergeant of the Senegalese troops, not only providing his usual humor but also leading them in battle, and even George Lynn, as the best friend injured badly in the first attack, gets a chance to shine.

Mildly recommended. Otto judiciously thinks this movie is OK, but not great.

Movie 51 for 2021.
