Carefree (RKO, 1938)

Lobby card for the movie CarefreeRKO tried something different with stars Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers with Carefree, the team’s penultimate movie for the studio. Here, Fred plays Tony, a psychiatrist induced by friend Stephen (Ralph Bellamy) to try to convince Stephen’s fiancée, Amanda (Ginger Rogers) to go through with their planned wedding. She has already called it off more than once. The inevitable happens, and after a dream induced by Tony’s treatment, Amanda does realize she’s truly in love — but with her doctor! There is good dancing as always, though the songs (by Irving Berlin) are a bit weak. Jack Carson has a good minor role as Astaire’s assistant.

Mildly recommended. Otto judiciously thinks this movie is pretty good, but not in the same class as the major Astaire-Rogers pictures.

Movie 24 for 2021.
