A gangster newly released from prison decides to take advantage of the government’s war-related ban on sales of new tires to get involved in the black market, including making counterfeit tires with a synthetic rubber substitute. When one of those tires, an early experimental failure, causes a crash that kills a young woman’s brother, her fiancé vows to bust up the racket and, frustrated by the plodding pace of the police, he turns to his fellow munitions plant workers to investigate and nail the ring. Ricardo Cortez makes a suitably slimy crook, and William Henry does well in selling the sincerity of the investigating worker, even if he comes off as a bit dumb some of the time. Rochelle Hudson does a good turn as the moll. Watch for a young Alan Hale, Jr., as “Red.” The plot becomes a bit far-fetched as it goes along, but interesting performers and a brief running time help.
Mildly recommended. Otto judiciously thinks this movie is OK, but not great.
