Bela Lugosi plays wealthy and respected Charles Kessler, who was deserted by his wife (Betty Compson) years before. From time to time, Kessler is gripped by a homicidal mania that is set off when he sees his wife wandering around his mansion’s grounds. (Unbeknownst to Kessler, his wife is being hidden and cared for by the gardener, as an accident on the night of her departure killed her lover and left her disoriented.) When Kessler kills a new maid (Terry Walker), young Ralph Dickson (John McGuire) is convicted of the murder and executed because of his history with the victim. The arrival of Ralph’s twin brother, Paul, sets the stage for more murder. The plot is a bit confused, and it is rather strange that the police have been unable to get to the bottom of the killings that happen in Kessler’s home, but nevertheless it’s enjoyable enough.
Mildly recommended. Otto judiciously thinks this movie is OK.
