Mr. Wong (Boris Karloff) attends a party whose host (Morgan Wallace) is slain in the midst of a charades-type game. The victim had feared for his life after arranging for a rare gem to be smuggled out of China. The slain collector’s wife (Dorothy Tree) and private secretary (Craig Reynolds) are suspected, as they were the other two persons taking part in the game, and it is no secret that the spouse is unhappy and the secretary is enamored of her. A Russian musician in the household (Ivan Lebedeff) also is numbered among the suspects, and it is possible that the gem’s original owners would kill to get it back as well. Grant Withers returns as stolid Captain Street of the police, and Holmes Herbert portrays a criminologist interested in the killing. The film shares some similarities with 1931’s Murder at Midnight.
Mildly recommended. Otto judiciously thinks this movie is OK.
