Incoherent action and a muddled plot fatally weaken this tale of rival groups of gun-runners out to obtain a fortune in gold and jewelry stolen during the Second World War and concealed beneath a swimming pool in the former home of the Japanese commander in charge of Surabaya (hence the original title, Surabaya Conspiracy). Michael Preston and Barbara Bouchet are former flames thrown together but on opposite sides in the scheming. There’s plenty of violence and offhanded treachery, but none of the characters is particularly well developed. Michael Rennie, in his last role, doesn’t contribute much, and menacing Vic Diaz is given too little to do as a conniving bad guy — though not perhaps as little as Richard Jaeckel. The copy I watched also had a reel out of order, I think, which did nothing to help make the story easier to follow.
Not recommended. Otto thinks you should avoid this movie.
