Rushed experimentation brings tragedy for a scientist (David Hedison) and his wife (Patricia Owens) in this well-crafted tale that begins with the discovery of a dead man. The story is largely recounted retrospectively, with the wife telling of the developments that led to the gruesome situation that kicks off the movie. Careful direction builds suspense, as the effects of the experiment gone wrong are made apparent fairly quickly, but the actual results are kept hidden for some time — and a final chilling revelation awaits. The viewer can’t help but feel sympathy for those caught up in the circumstances, as the scientist struggles to undo his rash act. Vincent Price provides competent support as the scientist’s brother.
Recommended. Otto finds this one pleasing enough to relax.
