Joel McCrea does a solid job as a stage company detective seeking to uncover the crook(s) responsible for recent holdups. To accomplish his goal, he goes to work for the local sheriff (Addison Richards) as deputy. Velvet Clark (Mark Stevens), the man responsible for the crimes, proves to be a ruthless killer, and though the movie makes some gestures toward adding some complexity, he nevertheless remains an unsympathetic villain. The concluding manhunt and battle seem a bit too perfunctory, but the movie does hold the viewer’s interest.
Mildly recommended. Otto judiciously thinks this movie is OK, but not great.
Movie 7 for 2021.
