Beyond the Living Dead (1973)

Slow pacing and some confusing storytelling undermine this horror film, originally titled La orgĂa de los muertos and better known, perhaps, in English as The Hanging Woman. After his uncle’s death, a young man journeys to the avuncular home and along the way discovers the body of a woman hanging in the cemetery, a woman who turns out to be his murdered cousin. The plot slowly advances, with the fellow meeting the denizens of the creepy house, including his uncle’s widow, who practices black magic and has a yen for men, and his uncle’s partner, a mad scientist with a beautiful daughter. Meanwhile, the police investigate, with some suspicion directed at the young man (with his cousin’s death, he’s the sole heir) and some toward the weird gravedigger Igor (Paul Naschy), who has some secrets as well. Some good scenes, including some with zombies, help make up for the lethargic storytelling, but this is no masterpiece.

Mildly recommended. Otto judiciously thinks this movie is OK, but not great.

Movie 456 for 2021.
