The False Faces (Paramount, 1919)

A tale of espionage and revenge: Michael Lanyard, the Lone Wolf (Henry B. Walthall), pursues a German agent, Karl Eckstrom (Lon Chaney), to avenge the killing of his sister and nephew, a pursuit that takes him from the World War I battlefields of France to a ship sunk by a German submarine and to a hidden German base on the American coast. Mixed up in this is a contest for possession of a cylinder containing important information, too, as well as some romance and a drunken submarine commander haunted by the ghosts of his victims. A hero to cheer and a villain to hiss make for a fairly entertaining war-related picture.

Mildly recommended. Otto judiciously thinks this movie is OK, but not great.

Movie 419 for 2021.
