Captain Carroll (Frank Hall Crane) is just asking for trouble when, desperate for ship’s officers, he hires Woolf Barstow (Noah Beery) as first mate despite his very bad reputation — a reputation that is soon shown to be well-deserved, as Barstow is soon slowly poisoning the captain and plotting both the takeover of the ship and more with the assistance of his pal, boatswain Scar Murray (Montagu Love). The captain’s daughter, Mary (Miriam Seegar), is short on allies, but help may come from the new second mate, Steve Trent (George Walsh), though a drunken derelict when signed on. Dorothy Burgess has a good role as Barstow’s discarded lover, Concha. The villains are suitably villainous and the action fairly entertaining, though the captain and his daughter are rather too naïve.
Mildly recommended. Otto judiciously thinks this movie is OK, but not great.
Movie 389 for 2021.
