Lobby card for the movie Big Calibre

Big Calibre (1935)

After the murder of his father and the theft of $60,000, young Bob Neal (Bob Steele) and pal Rusty (John Elliott) search for the killer, and they find a clue in the town of Gladstone. Unfortunately, Bob has been blamed for the robbery of the stage and is suspected of murdering local rancher Jim Bowers (Frank Ball), too, because he was found with the missing man’s watch, which he discovered on a body by a water hole. Bob teams up with June Bowers (Peggy Campbell), the missing rancher’s daughter, to investigate. Secret passages and disguises add to the interest, but it’s all rather too far-fetched, especially the villain with the world’s worst disguise. A fair amount of time is devoted to a dance, too. Not one of Steele’s stronger efforts, but it will likely be pleasing enough for his fans.

Mildly recommended. Otto judiciously thinks this movie is OK, but not great.

Movie 387 for 2021.
