The Three Mesquiteers (Republic, 1936)

Lullaby Joslin (Syd Saylor) and his buddies, veterans of the First World War, head west to homestead, but the Canfield brothers want the land for themselves and are intent on thwarting the would-be farmers. It’s up to Syd’s pals Stony Brooke (Robert Livingston) and Tucson Smith (Ray “Crash” Corrigan) to take the part of the homesteaders, aided, with varying levels of effectiveness, by Lullaby, essentially establishing the trio of the title. J. P. McGowan and Al Bridge are suitably menacing as the main bad guys. Republic found a winning formula here, and more than four dozen Three Mesquiteers pictures followed, although the lineup went through some changes (e.g., this picture was Saylor’s only outing as Lullaby). A good start to the series.

Recommended. Otto finds this one pleasing enough to relax.

Movie 382 for 2021.
