Grief Street (Chesterfield, 1931)

This early talkie mystery opens with a scene that seems to involve a murder but does not (similar to the opening of the following year’s The Death Kiss). Then, however, a real murder occurs as a stage star lothario has met his doom: But how was it done, as he was found strangled to death behind a locked door and window? Some of the acting is stilted or just oddball (the comic relief police sergeant [James P. Burtis] is constantly mugging), and the movie is burdened with a so-so lead (John Holland) who takes up with a heroine (Barbara Kent) who herself hides some secrets. Still, the movie manages to be fairly entertaining, considering its early date.

Mildly recommended. Otto judiciously thinks this movie is OK, but not great.

Movie 371 for 2021.
