A pair of boomer brakemen (Robert Armstrong and James Gleason) get jobs on a new railroad, planning to travel on after a spell of work, but the attractions of the eatery owner and her pal (Patricia Caron and Zasu Pitts) tempt them to settle down. This buddy drama / comedy includes a subplot related to the theft of his roll from a coworker who wins big gambling (coupled with assault), which sees suspicion fall on one of our protagonists. Armstrong and Gleason do well as the pals, and Pitts is appealing in her role as well. The footage of railroad activities is a nice bonus.
Mildly recommended. Otto judiciously thinks this movie is OK, but not great.
Movie 354 for 2021.
