Poster for the movie The Longest Day

The Longest Day (Twentieth Century Fox, 1962)

Eighteen years after the largest seaborne assault in history, Twentieth Century Fox released a movie based on Cornelius Day’s bestseller recounting the events of D-Day, the 6th of June, 1944, with Day himself penning the screenplay (with some episodes by others). Multiple directors and an international cast collaborated to deliver what is probably the best World War 2 movie, one that spares time for a look at happenings on both sides: from last-minute preparations in England for the invasion, to the long-waiting but ready French Resistance, to German disarray and dysfunctional organization, and then to the desperate efforts to get off the beaches in the face of strong defenses, at least on some beaches, with the grim toll taken there, as well as the role played by British and American paratroops in securing areas inland, and with a willingness to acknowledge Allied missteps, too. even major stars such as John Wayne have relatively few minutes on-screen, but they make the most of them. I’ve watched this a number of times and will undoubtedly do so again.

Highly recommended! Otto finds this one pleasing enough to relax.

Movie 314 for 2021.
