Hell-Fire Austin (Tiffany, 1932)

At the end of the First World War, two demobbed soldiers, Ken “Hell-Fire” Austin (Ken Maynard) and his pal Bouncer (Nat Pendleton), head back west, where Ken has bragged he is well-known. It is soon revealed that he engaged in a bit of hyperbole, and before long, the boys find themselves working on a chain gang — whence they are released at the behest of local Mark Edmonds (Alan Roscoe), who wants Ken to ride his horse in an upcoming race. In the meantime, however, Ken has become drawn to rancher Judy Brooks (Ivy Merton), and he vows to ride her horse, Tarzan, instead, so she can use the prize money to pay off a note Edmonds holds on her property. A break with Edmonds gets the local sheriff on Ken’s trail, and it’s up to Bouncer to help Ken and Tarzan hide until the race. Light-hearted fare but a fairly pleasing way to spend a little time.

Mildly recommended. Otto judiciously thinks this movie is OK, but not great.

Movie 283 for 2021.
