Impresario George White attained success on Broadway with his “Scandals,” annual revue shows similar to Ziegfeld’s “Follies,” and he brought the idea to the screen a few times, twice in the Thirties and a third time in 1945. As usual with such revues, the plot is pretty flimsy, with two couples bumping along the road to romance: Jack Evans (Jack Haley) and Joan Mason (Joan Davis), who face opposition to their marriage from Jack’s sister Clarabelle (Margaret Hamilton), and Jill Martin (Martha Holliday) and Tom McGrath (Phillip Terry), whose amour is rendered more difficult by their working relationship on the show, and by a secret that Jill has. There are plenty of laughs thanks especially to Davis and Haley, and lots of music as well, mostly thanks to Gene Krupa and his orchestra, so fans will want to take a look.
Mildly recommended. Otto judiciously thinks this movie is OK, but not great.
Movie 269 for 2021.
