A western-oriented entry in the field of morale-boosting all-star musicals set around a servicemen’s canteen, this 1944 Columbia outing has a ranch owner (Charles Starrett) who joins the Army and is assigned to a camp near his home, while a canteen is set up for the soldiers with performing talent and staffing from the area, including the gals who now work on the ranch — one of whom (Jane Frazee) captures the ranch owner’s heart. The plot is mostly an excuse to provide time for performances. Singing cowboy Tex Ritter is on hand, as are Jimmy Wakely and his Saddle Pals and Roy Acuff and his Smoky Mountain Boys and Girls. Max Terhune contributes his ventriloquism. Topping it all off are the Mills Brothers, who are firmly entertaining as usual.
Recommended. Otto finds this one pleasing enough to relax.
Movie 234 for 2021.
