Vincent Price heads the cast in this anthology movie with three stories based on the work of Edgar Allan Poe, taking an important role in each — in “Morella,” as a father reunited with the daughter he blames for the death of her mother many years before; as an expert wine taster who cuckolds a drunkard but meets his doom, in “The Black Cat,” which also features Peter Lorre and Joyce Jameson; and as a man who agrees to be hypnotized on the point of death, with Debra Paget as his wife and Basil Rathbone as the sinister mesmerist. The segments vary somewhat in tone, with a wry humor in particular characterizing “The Black Cat,” with its fitting twist ending, but more straightforward horror in the other two. Not as strong a movie as 1963’s similar The Comedy of Terrors, but still quite enjoyable.
Recommended. Otto finds this one pleasing enough to relax.
Movie 193 for 2021.
