Absorbing tale of a man (Jim Brown), loyal to his dead boss (Dana Andrews), who undertakes to carry money from the sale of cattle back across the desert to his employer’s Mexican ranch. Along the way, he gets help from a gambler (Fred Williamson) in dealing with the many folks who are chasing the money and willing to kill to get it. Of course, the gambler is also after the gold, but is willing to wait until they reach Mexico to try for it. The camaraderie between Brown and Williamson’s characters adds interest to the story. Lee Van Cleef is perhaps underutilized as a bounty hunter who is among those on the trail, though he does well with the part; Barry Sullivan’s character, on the other hand, is a surprise.
Recommended. Otto finds this one pleasing enough to relax.
