Hammer and Shaw Brothers teamed up in 1974 to bring out a moderately effective blend of martial arts and horror movies, with action star David Chiang as the leader of a group of warrior siblings who recruit Dr. Van Helsing (Peter Cushing), who is visiting China, to assist them in freeing their village from the terror-filled reign of vampires (whom the viewer knows are headed up by none other than Dracula). The kung fu battles aren’t the most impressive, and the plot is a little slow, but the movie does benefit from decent performances, and particularly from the presence of Cushing. Worth a look.
Mildly recommended. Otto judiciously thinks this movie is OK, but not great.
Movie 147 for 2021.
