When movie star Mona Harrison (Adele Jergens) opens a packing crate from the studio, she finds more than just the fabrics she was expecting: She finds the body of the designer with whom she was fighting just the day before. Rather than calling the police, she summons enamored newspaperman Joe Medford (George Brent), who is eager to investigate the case — as is rival newspaperwoman Rosemary Durant (Joan Blondell). Their rivalry and romantic interest in each other drive a good deal of the action in this mystery, as they persist in their efforts at detection despite discouragement from the police, in the form of Lieutenant Mark Wilson (Jim Bannon).
A fairly standard setup is handled well by seasoned professionals, and if this movie doesn’t rise to new heights, it is competently done and delivers an entertaining time, with a pleasing, if perhaps obvious, twist as well.
Recommended. Otto finds this one pleasing enough to relax.
Movie 114 for 2021.
