Guys who find that the women at Alpine College won’t go out with them because of advice from the dean’s secretary, Susan Benchley (Chris Noel), recruit surf bum Ronnie Duke (Gary Clarke) to woo her, though she already has a fiancé, the captain of the school’s ski team (Steve Franken). Ronnie pretends to be the heir of a Hawaiian pineapple magnate, which makes him of value to the school, which is being threatened by loan sharks owing to an outstanding debt. Will Susan fall for Ronnie’s charm? Will the deceitful Ronnie learn a lesson and reform? Will the school be saved?
The plot is rather silly, including assorted trickery and a big ski contest, but the movie offers a bit of humor and lots of music, from Jay and the Americans, the Beau Brummels, the Astronauts, and Dick and Dee Dee, thanks to Ronnie’s need for music to help him think. There’s even a bear, though not, as in American International’s Ski Party, a polar bear.
Mildly recommended. Otto judiciously thinks this movie is OK, but not great.
Movie 100 for 2021.
