Experience clashes with youth and learns a thing or two in 1943’s Destroyer. Edward G. Robinson stars as a retired sailor turned shipyard worker who returns to active duty to serve aboard the new John Paul Jones, built as a replacement for a heroic vessel on which he had sailed in the past. His “Old Navy” ways bring conflict, not least with the acting Chief Boatswain’s Mate he displaced (Glenn Ford), but the ship also seems to suffer from a jinx, with repeated issues arising during her trials, such that she is not released to serve with the fleet but must perform mail run duties. Will the ship and her crew get a chance to redeem themselves?
Recommended. Otto finds this one pleasing enough to relax.
Movie 96 for 2021.
