Ad for the movie Terror Island

Terror Island (Paramount, 1920)

An inventor of a new submarine (Harry Houdini) helps a woman whose uncle wishes to ignore her captive father’s pleas for help and instead steal a map to an island near a treasure-filled wreck. There are perils aplenty for both hero and heroine, and costar Lila Lee shows herself a game sport. Although unfortunately the print I saw, from the Realart 1922 re-release, was missing two reels featuring one of Houdini’s escapes, later in the movie he does free himself while hanging by his neck. The scenes aboard the submarine are good, too, and there’s a person closed up in a safe and thrown into the sea as well. Lots of action in an entertaining storyline, marred however by the missing minutes, so this is probably not the best place to start with Houdini’s movies.

Mildly recommended. Otto judiciously thinks this movie is OK, but not great.

Movie 77 for 2021.
