Gloria Jean, Deanna Durbin’s successor at Universal, plays a teen eager to secure success for the drummer she adores (Mel Tormé) and his band, piling up schemes to win a contest, to gain his affection, to thwart those who would co-opt his talent for their own ends. Patric Knowles portrays her long-suffering but somewhat scattered father, who reluctantly agrees to help her out, and Evelyn Ankers is in turn his fiancée, who wants things set right. Bing’s brother Bob Crosby and his band are featured, with Bob getting a modest role as the boyfriend of the band’s singer (played by Marjorie Weaver), who persuades her to try to lure the young drummer but then risks losing her entirely. Silly fun that is best not to take very seriously.
Recommended, if only to watch Mel Tormé on drums (he played for a time with Chico Marx’s band). Otto finds this one pleasing enough to relax.
Movie 76 for 2021.
