Gold shipments are being hijacked, and it’s up to federal marshals Sandy Jackson (Raymond Hatton) and Nevada Jack Mackenzie (Johnny Mack Brown) to get to the bottom of the crimes. To that end, Sandy comes to town dressed in somber clothing, hoping to be mistaken for an undertaker, though instead everyone leaps to the conclusion that he is a preacher, leading to some discomfort for Sandy and some amusing scenes — watch for his stately delivery of “The Ballad of Jesse James” when partygoers expect a hymn. Meanwhile, Jack is finding out what he can about the bad guys by pretending to be a railroad detective. Fun and fairly fast-paced.
Mildly recommended. Otto judiciously thinks this movie is OK, but not great.
Movie 17 for 2021.
