The Nitwits (RKO, 1935)

A young Betty Grable replaces Dorothy Lee as the love interest for Bert in this 1935 Wheeler-Woolsey mystery-comedy. In this one, the boys get mixed up in the murder of a music executive who was trying to put the moves on his secretary (Grable). There are plenty of other suspects, of course, and mutual misunderstandings to complicate matters while a detective who had been brought in to protect the victim (obviously unsuccessfully) is on hand for the investigation as well. Grable has charm and does well with Wheeler in their interactions, and Woolsey has a good, long sequence with a cop played by Edgar Dearing, but Evelyn Brent, as the victim’s wife, and Erik Rhodes, as an irate songwriter, are under-used.

Mildly recommended. Otto judiciously thinks this movie is OK, but not great.

Movie 6 for 2021.
